Bike Safety

We all know how much fun it is to ride a bike, just make sure you follow a few tips to keep this great activity safe.

Wear a Helmet
Head injuries can be devastating and life changing so protect your noggin by wearing a properly fitted helmet. When you put your helmet on make sure that is does not shift or move around. Have the strap done up tight enough so you can fit one finger between your chin and the strap. And remember if we are asking our kids to wear one, set the example and wear one too.

Be Visible
Make sure you can be seen and heard, especially when it is dark. Try to wear bright and/or reflective clothing and have lights on your bike. Also have a bell and use it when sharing the path with other pedestrians.

Know the Hand Signals and be Predictable
It is important that when you are sharing the road with other vehicles you indicate your intentions. So make sure to follow the rules of the road and know the hand signals. Avoid making any sudden changes in direction and ride in a straight line. Always ride on the right side of the road or path.

Check Your Bike
Before going out for a ride take a quick check of your bike. Make sure that there is enough air in the tires and that the breaks are working properly. Also tighten any quick release levers to make sure everything stays in place.

Stay Hydrated
Always carry a water bottle  with you. Bike riding can be physical so it is important to have water available.
